EPFL: Anna Fontcuberta i Morral to become first female president as of 01/01/2025

Anna Fontcuberta i Morral will chair EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne) from 01/01/2025, announces the Swiss Federal Council on 27/03/2024. She will succeed Martin Vetterli, in office since 2017, for a four-year term. She will be the first woman to be president of a federal polytechnic school.

Anna Fontcuberta i Morral has dual Swiss and Spanish nationality. Born in 1975, she grew up near Barcelona, where she studied physics. She obtained her PhD in materials science in France, at Polytechnique, in 2001.

She carried out research in 2001-2002, and then in 2004-2005, as a visiting researcher at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, in the United States. There, she co-founded the start-up Aonex Technologies.

She obtained a habilitation in experimental physics at the Technical University of Munich in 2009. In 2008, she moved to Switzerland and joined EPFL as a tenure track assistant professor (conditional pre-tenure leading to appointment as professor) at the Institute of Materials.
