EU: what the “higher education” package plans for to reach a European degree

The European Commission presents its "Higher Education" package of three initiatives aimed at "advancing transnational cooperation between higher education establishments, with the ultimate aim of creating a European degree", on 27/03/2024.

It includes:
• a communication proposing a path for concrete cooperation between EU Member States and the higher education sector to create a European degree;
• a proposal for a Council recommendation aimed at improving quality assurance processes and the automatic recognition of qualifications in higher education;
• a Council recommendation aimed at making academic careers more attractive and sustainable.

“We are proposing a new type of joint, voluntary degree at the bachelor's, master's or doctoral level. It would primarily benefit our students, who would be able to study in different countries and different languages with automatic credit recognition", says Iliana Ivanova, European Commissioner for education, innovation, research, culture and youth.
