Europe: "Be a major R&I power and train even more talent" (Emmanuel Macron)

"One of the pillars of shared prosperity in Europe is the battle for innovation and research. We need to be obsessed with productivity; to achieve this, we have to be a major R&I power. We need to train even more talents, keep them in our laboratories, universities and major centres, and attract others. In this respect, the competition from Asia and the United States is there", declares Emmanuel Macron, French president, during his speech on Europe at the Sorbonne on 25/04/2024.

In his view to achieve this, "we need to:

• reaffirm the objective of devoting 3% of European GDP to research, which is a priority. We, the French people, must continue our efforts in the public sector, but above all in the private sector with additional research partnerships. In Europe, we need to show that this is a key element of the prosperity pact;

• strengthen Horizon Europe by focusing on the most effective programmes, in particular the ERC, and go much further in breakthrough innovations;

• assume to be a continent that invests in breakthrough innovation and the most advanced fundamental research".
