AI Act: A law adopted by the Council of the EU and Parliament, entry into force imminent

The Council of the EU gives the green light to the agreement reached between the European Parliament and the Council on the law aimed at harmonising the rules on artificial intelligence, known as the "Artificial Intelligence Act" or AI Act, on 21/05/2024.

As the Parliament also adopted the text on 13/03, following the conclusion of the provisional agreement between the co-legislators on 08/12/2023, the legislative act will be published in the Official Journal of the EU in the next few days and will enter into force 20 days after this publication.

According to the legislation, "AI systems considered to be high-risk (in particular systems used to determine access to educational establishments) will have to comply with strict requirements (in particular regarding the quality of the datasets used, human control, a high level of performance in terms of robustness, accuracy and cybersecurity)".

AI systems carrying "an unacceptable risk will be prohibited" and those carrying "a minimal risk will be exempt from any obligation", says the European Commission.
