Leiden 2024: American and Chinese universities top ranking of most impactful in the research field

Harvard University (U.S.) is the world's most impactful university in terms of research publications, arriving first in the Leiden ranking, published on 03/07/2024 by the CWTS research institute in the Netherlands. With 94,615 publications in total and 21,2% of them belonging to the top 10% of their field, the institution takes the lead in a ranking of 1,506 universities from 72 countries.

Coming second is the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which surpasses the number of total publications (100,471) but with 13,7% in the top 10% of their field. Stanford University, arriving third, has 45,517 publications and 20,7% in the top 10% of their field. The top three remain unchanged from 2023.

For Europe, British universities take the lead, with the University of Oxford (4^th) counting 47,332 total publications and 20,5% of them in the top 10% of their field.
