European university alliances : degree, funding, future... What has happened since 01/2024

On 28/06/2024, the European Commission announced the results of the fifth and final call for projects to select the last European university alliances to receive European funding. A total of 64 alliances have been selected, surpassing the Commission's initial target by four alliances.

Although the last call for projects is now closed, many questions remain unanswered, notably concerning the European degree, the legal status of the alliances and the future funding of the initiative.

In her guidelines for her second term as President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen states that she intends to continue working on these alliances:

"We need to attract new talent and retain the best brains and brightest minds here in Europe. To this end, I want to strengthen collaboration between research departments, higher education and businesses, in particular by reinforcing our university alliances".

In her letter of intent following her State of the European Union speech on 13/09/2023, she indicated that the joint European degree was a priority for her for 2024.
