Top 50 companies investing the most in R&D in the EU since 2020

Every year, the European Commission publishes the "EU R&D Scoreboard", a scoreboard of EU industrial R&D investment. News Tank lists the companies investing the most in R&D in the EU.

The EU R&D Scoreboard is a "Science for Policy" report from the Joint Research Centre (JRC), the European Commission's science and knowledge service. It aims to "provide evidence-based scientific support to the European policy-making process".

The Scoreboard data was collected from companies' annual reports and accounts by the BvD (Bureau van Dijk). The source documents, annual reports and accounts, are in the public domain and the Scoreboard can therefore be replicated independently.

The R&D investments included in the Scoreboard are those financed by the companies themselves. This excludes R&D carried out by companies under contract to customers such as governments or other companies. It also excludes the companies' share of R&D investment in an associated company or joint venture.

However, R&D investment includes research subcontracted to other companies, public research bodies or universities.
