Shanghai 2024: U.S. and China leading the global ranking; UK and Germany leading in Europe

The Shanghai 2024 ranking is still dominated by the U.S., with 114 universities over the 500 listed, followed by China with 93, according to the ranking published on 15/08/2024. Harvard University tops the ranking list for the 22^nd year, followed by Stanford and MIT (United States).

The UK and Germany tie as the most represented European countries in the top 500, with both 35 universities ranked. France counts 18 institutions in the list, tying with Canada and Italy.

Only four European universities make it to the top 20: three British (the universities of Cambridge and Oxford and the University College London) and one French (Paris-Saclay University). Other leaders in Europe include Switzerland, Denmark and Sweden.

In total, Europe represents 181 institutions in the top 500 in 2024, compared to 180 in 2023.
