Franco-German University: the risk of the reduction in the teaching of French and German

"One of the major risks for the Franco-German University (FGU) lies in the general downward trend observed in Germany and France in the cultural importance of teaching French and German", states an evaluation report on the university's 2017-2023 Contract of objectives and resources (COR), published in August 2024.

As a result, "the number of high school and university students targeted by the FGU and of programme leaders is gradually shrinking and the number of students enrolled is stagnating [around 6,100], while the pool of people likely to take on the role of programme leader is also shrinking. The FGU must therefore counter a trend and take into account the new preferences of targeted students".

Carried out by the consultancy agency Syspons GmbH at the request of the French and German Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Higher Education and Research, the evaluation takes stock of the COR's priorities and the FGU's missions in a changing European context.
