One Commissioner for both education and research to "do the university check" (T. Jorgensen, EUA)

"It will be important that the next Commissioner for education and research ensures that EU regulations are helpful for research, education and innovation. In other words, by doing a ‘university check’, as we have argued for in our 'Renewed social contract for Europe and its universities'", says Thomas Jorgensen, Director for Policy Coordination and Foresight at the EUA, to News Tank on 02/09/2024.

He is speaking in the context of the publication, by the EUA, of a statement titled "Why Europe needs one Commissioner for research, innovation and education" the same day.

With the names of the candidate Commissioners now known, the EU Council and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will now select the 27 Commissioners and allocate portfolios to them. Then, the Commissioners-designate participate in hearings before the parliamentary committees overseeing their prospective areas of responsibility. Each committee evaluates the candidate's qualifications and submits its findings to the President of Parliament.
