ERC Starting grants 2024: €780 M for 494 winners; Germany hosts the most award-winning projects

494 young researchers were awarded Starting grants in 2024 (+94 compared to 2023), for a total budget of €780 M (+€152 M) funded under Horizon Europe, announces the European Research Council on 05/09/2024.

These grants, which average €1.5 M over five years, "support cutting-edge research in a wide range of fields, from life sciences and physics to social sciences and the humanities". They will help "researchers at the start of their careers to launch their own projects, train their teams and pursue their most promising ideas".

In 2024, nationals from 51 countries will be rewarded (compared to 44 in 2023), in particular Germans (94 researchers, +28 compared to 2023), Italians (61, +4) and French (44, +8).

The awarded researchers will carry out their research in universities and research centres in 24 EU and associated countries (like in 2023): mainly in Germany (98 projects, +11 compared to 2023), the Netherlands (51, +7), the UK (50, +18) and France (49, -1).
