"We do not have plans for a youth mobility scheme", says Keir Starmer, the British Prime Minister, during a state visit in Germany on 28/08/2024 while discussing a "wider reset" with Europe but no "reversing Brexit".

The new Labour government, which came into power after the General election of 04/07/2024, says it has no plans to take Britain back into the EU’s Erasmus+ scheme.

The kingdom initially parted ways with the European exchange programme when it left the European Union on 01/02/2020, although the academic community and students stood up against the decision.

The first Labour government in 14 years declares it wants closer relationships with the rest of Europe, but "the deal would not mean re-entering the single market or the customs union."

Back in April 2024, the European Commission proposed to the Council to open negotiations with the United Kingdom on an agreement to facilitate youth mobility: "Such an agreement would make it easier for young EU and UK citizens to study, work and live in the UK and the EU respectively", stated the Commission.
