Cern: Costas Fountas, 25^th president of the Council as of 01/01/2025

Costas Fountas has been elected 25^th President of Cern, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, by the Council for a one-year term renewable twice, starting on 01/01/2025, Cern announces on 30/09/2024. He will take over from Eliezer Rabinovici, whose term expires in December.

Costas Fountas is currently Professor of Physics and Head of the High Energy Physics Group at the University of Ioannina, in Greece.

After completing his doctorate at Columbia University in 1989, he worked on the electronics of the CCFR (Chicago-Columbia-Fermilab-Rochester) experiment at Fermilab, then joined various international collaborations, such as Zeus, a large particle detector at the Hera electron-proton collider at the Desy laboratory in Hamburg, where he designed innovative triggering systems.

He then contributed to projects at Cern's Large Hadron Collider (LHC), focusing on jet cross sections and the search for new fundamental interactions.
