70 years of Cern: "We will propose a law on the European Research Area" (Ursula von der Leyen)

"Cern teaches us that if we want to be more competitive, we also need to collaborate more. All your discoveries are freely accessible. It is in this spirit that we will be proposing a law on the European Research Area. All European researchers should be able to access our world-class research infrastructures, such as supercomputers", declares Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, on 01/10/2024, at the ceremony to mark the 70^th anniversary of Cern.

In line with the guidelines she presented to the European Parliament on 18/07/2024, she also indicates that she wants to increase the budget devoted to R&I in Europe:

"Horizon Europe is the largest research investment programme in the world. The ERC is its jewel. We need to invest in this area. That's why I want to increase the envelope devoted to research in our next budget.

But I also want to make it easier for you to access these funds. We need to focus our efforts on disruptive innovation, as proposed in the Draghi report. Our scientists must be able to find the resources they need, right here in Europe."
