ECIU alliance: "Link the European degree with the micro-credentials movement"

"We think we should link the European degree with the micro-credentials movement and the European approach to micro-credentials. Lifelong learners don’t always need a full degree to solve the issues they face in their employment nor do they have the time sometimes, the micro-credentials approach in Europe is a good idea for that", states Olga Wessels, Head of the Brussels office of the European Universities alliance ECIU to News Tank, on 14/10/2024.

ECIU was the first alliance to issue micro-credentials at the alliance level, in September 2023.

With Foci, the pilot project on the European degree in which the alliance participated and whose results it presented to the European Commission in April 2024, "we tried to to align the European degree criteria to flexible learning pathways and micro-credentials.

We thought about what we would need for the European degree. We can, for example, stack micro-credentials towards a degree so there are very clear links possible and that is what we are advocating for: these links should be explored".
