ERC Synergy grants 2024: Germany at the top again with 53 PIs represented in 34 projects

Of the 57 projects awarded a Synergy grant in 2024, 34 involve at least one researcher affiliated with a German institution, making Germany the most represented country by number of projects, followed by the UK (18) which regained second place following its return to Horizon Europe, to the detriment of France, taking third place (13), according to the results published by the ERC on 05/11/2024.

If we look at the number of principal investigators (PIs) involved in these projects, France is also the 3rd most represented country, with 20 researchers, after Germany (53) and the UK (24).

Regarding host institutions, the Max Planck Society, a formally independent, non-governmental and not-for-profit association of German research institutes founded in 1911, has the most award-winning PIs (15) in 2024. With 12 PIs, the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) comes second, followed by the University of Cambridge (UK) and RWTH Aachen University (Germany) with six PIs.
