Overcoming Europe's lag: "We need one united Europe in the field of science" (Andrzej Szeptycki)

"Instead of 27 separate states, we need one united Europe in the field of science to truly move forward", says Andrzej Szeptycki, Under-Secretary of State at the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education, at the Falling Walls Foundation event in Berlin on 08/11/2024.

He is taking part in a round table discussion moderated by Maria Leptin, President of the ERC, entitled "Boosting Frontier Research: Europe's next move", who wonders about the "walls that have to fall for Europe to do better and to go from frontier research to innovation".

According to the President of the ERC, "Frontier research is one of the most relevant topics we can discuss today. In September, a report on European competitiveness by Mario Draghi revealed a growing GDP gap between the EU and the US, driven by slower productivity growth in Europe.

Draghi notes that Europe is stuck in a static industrial structure with few new companies disrupting industries or driving growth. Frontier research pushes the limits of understanding, driven by curiosity and the desire to explore unanswered questions".
