The European Commission announces that formal negotiations between the EU and Japan for the latter's association with Horizon Europe are launched on 29/11/2024. Exploratory talks were closed on 12/09/2022.

These negotiations follow the same procedures as those of the association of Canada, i.e. they concern association solely with pillar 2 of the Horizon Europe programme, on global issues and European industrial competitiveness.

If the discussions, which are expected to continue over the coming months, are successful, Japanese researchers will be able to lead and coordinate their own research and innovation projects under the programme, seek more in-depth collaboration with partners in the EU and other associated countries, and obtain funding.

"With the recent association of Canada in July, Horizon Europe now includes 19 associated countries, more than any previous EU research and innovation programme. The association of the Republic of Korea is expected to be signed in the coming months to allow its participation from 2025, and negotiations with Egypt and Switzerland are ongoing"…
