DFG : Increase of 12.9% of German universities basic funding from 2019 to 2022

"In 2022, German universities received a total of around €26.7 Bn in basic funding, €3 Bn more than in 2019 - an increase of 12.9 %. A total of €10.4 Bn in third-party funding was allocated to universities in 2022, an increase of €1.7 Bn, or 19.1 %, compared to 2019", according to the Funding Atlas 2024, presented in Berlin on 25/11/2024 by the DFG (German Research Foundation), the German Rectors' Conference and Stifterverband (a not-for-profit association working mostly on education, science and innovation).

The Funding Atlas is a set of figures on public research funding in Germany and has been published every three years since 1997 by the DFG. The latest edition covers the years 2020 to 2022.

"But this increase is not enough in either area to meet the considerable and ever-increasing demands on universities’ performance capacity as they compete internationally, neither can it compensate for additional burdens, such as the recent high-wage increases", says Katja Becker, President of the DFG.
