Ireland: Universities calling on next government to invest in higher education after elections (IUA)

The Irish Universities Association (IUA) urges the incoming government to support its three key priorities: "Back students, fund the future and invest in research", can one read in their government key asks on 17/12/2024.

The 2024 Irish General Election took place on 29/11/2024. The centre-right political party Fianna Fáil won the most seats (48) in the Dáil (lower house of parliament), while its coalition partner Fine Gael (liberal-conservative party) won 38 seats.

Sinn Féin (former main opposition party, centre-left) won 39. The country is now anticipating a period of political negotiations to form a new government.

The IUA, which had published a list of priorities for higher education and research ahead of the elections, addressed to candidates from all political parties, is reiterating its demands to the future new government.

"Ireland’s ability to compete on a global stage for investment and economic advantage is intrinsically linked to the reputation and performance of its higher education and research sectors", says the association.
