Romania: Daniel David appointed Minister of Education and Research amid political crisis

Daniel David, Rector of the University Babeș-Bolyai (Romania), is confirmed as Minister of Education and Research by the Romanian Parliament, announces the Presidency on 23/12/2024, after Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu was appointed to form a new Government amid a political crisis in this Eastern European country.

On 06/12/2024, Romania's top court annulled the presidential vote after security services warned it had been distorted by a Russian influence campaign in favour of far-right candidate Calin Georgescu.

The new administration is a coalition consisting of the leftist Social Democratic Party (PSD), the centre-right National Liberal Party (PNL), the small ethnic Hungarian UDMR party and national minorities.

The 16 ministerial positions will be shared among the parties, holding a slim majority in the legislature. The new government is tasked with organising the rerun of the presidential election, in which it will put forward a common pro-European candidate.
