Wildfire in California: "No evacuation warning" for UCLA campus but remote instruction in place

"No evacuation warning or mandatory order for UCLA has been issued" regarding the wildfire currently burning through several areas of Los Angeles, states the University of California Los Angeles on 14/01/2025. The university is addressing students, parents and staff in virtual town halls to keep them updated on the situation.

"The Academic Senate has approved remote instruction for undergraduate and graduate students through 17/01/2025, while campus is under emergency operating status", declares UCLA.

The campus of the American university is located in West Los Angeles, surrounded by four wildfires, the closest being the Palisades fire. Although the campus borders a zone labelled "evacuation warning", meaning people have to prepare for eventual evacuation, it is over 6 km away from the "evacuation order" zone, which would mean immediate evacuation ordered by the authorities.

UCLA has a webpage dedicated to the situation, explaining that "if UCLA enters an evacuation warning zone or receives an evacuation order, updates and more information will be shared immediately".
