Coimbra Group: call "for rapid progress in the enactment of the European Degree"

"Coimbra Group is calling for rapid progress in the enactment of the European Degree, on a voluntary basis, in full compliance with the subsidiarity principle and competence of the EU27 Member States and by creating flexible and enabling structures which guarantee academic freedom", states the group on 03/02/2025.

One of Coimbra Group's requests is that stakeholders focus on the benefits and opportunities of the European Degree, "rather than dwelling on challenges".

"By focusing on its benefits, addressing challenges collaboratively, and ensuring adequate support, we can make the European Degree a transformative initiative for students, universities and the broader academic community".

The group recommends in particular that "the European Commission adopts an inclusive approach in the composition of the future EU Policy Lab on the European Degree"- which is intended to draw up guidelines and detailed action plans for the implementation of the diploma.

In the same spirit of inclusiveness, it also stresses "the importance of engaging with British and Swiss higher education…
