UKRI (UK): Ian Chapman appointed as the next CEO

Ian Chapman will become the next UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) CEO starting this summer, succeeding Ottoline Leyser, who has held the position since 2020, announces the Minister of State for Science, Research and Innovation of the United Kingdom, Patrick Vallance, on 25/02/2025.

Ian Chapman serves on the UKRI Board and is the CEO of the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA). In 2021, he received the Institute of Physics Glazebrook Medal for his research leadership. In 2023, he received the distinction of knighthood in the King’s New Year’s Honours, became an Honorary Fellow of the Nuclear Institute, and joined the Royal Society as a Fellow.

"Ian’s leadership experience, scientific expertise and academic achievements make him an exceptionally strong candidate to lead UKRI in pursuing ambitious, curiosity-driven research, as well as innovations that will unlock new benefits for the UK’s people and drive our Plan for Change," says Patrick Vallance.
