Iceland: Guðmundur Ingi Kristinsson appointed new Minister of Education and Children’s Affairs

Guðmundur Ingi Kristinsson is appointed new Minister of Education and Children’s Affairs of Iceland, announces the People’s Party, of which he is Vice-chairperson, on 23/03/2025.

As he represented the People’s Party in the Althingi (Icelandic Parliament), they also announce that Ragnar Þór Ingólfsson will succeed him as the party’s parliamentary leader.

The new nomination follows the resignation of the former Minister, Ásthildur Lóa Þórsdóttir, after it was revealed by Ruv, the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service, that she had a child 35 years ago when she was 23 and the baby’s father was 16.

It was reported that the pair met at a church group when the teenager was 15, which is the age of sexual consent in Iceland.

Ásthildur Lóa Þórsdóttir confirmed the relationship in a statement and said the relationship lasted only a few weeks, though the father was present at the child’s birth.
