"The past decade has been characterised by a rapid succession of crises that European universities have steered through, only to be confronted with deeply transformational challenges. These pressures have intensified financial constraints and created an urgent need for strategic investments, placing university financial sustainability under significant strain", states the EUA in a briefing titled 'Financially sustainable universities - State of play and strategies for future resilience', published on 03/04/2025.

The organisation reports largely positive funding trends across Europe over the last five years, but "recent cuts in public funding in several countries and continued global political tensions point to a volatility that challenges the prevailing ‘growth’ model experienced by the university sector until now, and call for a reassessment of financial strategies".
