R&T infrastructures: "Lack of unified governance" (C. Gomart); a European strategy to come

"The European Union currently has almost 600 research infrastructures of European interest. Of these, around 150 can be considered strategic in sensitive areas - defence as well as space, aeronautics and cyber. […] But today, these platforms are fragmented, disoriented and sometimes redundant. Unlike the U.S., which tends to group its infrastructures under agencies such as Nasa or the Department of Defence, Europe suffers from a lack of unified governance", declares Christophe Gomart, Member of the European Parliament (EPP), on 10/04/2025.

He is speaking at an event organised by Onera in Brussels and devoted to research and technological infrastructures and their contribution to European autonomy and competitiveness.

The issues of governance and strategic management of these infrastructures were raised by several speakers. Dominik Sobczak, Deputy Head of Unit at the Commission's DG R&I, presents the recommendations made by the group of experts on technological infrastructures in a report published in February 2025.
