No-deal in the negotiations between Swissuniversities and the publisher Wiley

The negotiations between Swissuniversities, the Swiss Rectors' Conference, and the publisher Wiley "have not concluded in an acceptable Read & Publish agreement that could satisfy all conditions while meeting Swissuniversities' requirements (prices, contractual terms)", declares EPFL on 02/04/2025.

Negotiations have been ongoing since early 2024 with the American multinational publishing company, which is focused on academic publishing and instructional materials.

"Swissuniversities submitted a compromise offer to Wiley, which was not accepted. The goal of a further step in the transformation towards open access could not be achieved to the extent desired", says the organisation.

Swissuniversities reports that the last offer from Wiley proposed "a price per article that is substantially higher than in other European countries".

The Rectors' Conference remains interested in a reliable relationship with the major academic publishers and simple reading and publication options, and is willing to resume negotiations based on the compromise offer.
