EU Innovation Fund: €23.3 Bn requested by 373 project applications for net-zero and battery tech

A total of 373 project applications were submitted in response to the two Innovation Fund calls for proposals launched on 03/12/2024, the European Commission announces on 14/05/2025. The call for net-zero technologies closed with 359 applications, while the Innovation Fund call, focused on battery technologies, received 14 applications.

"Seeking the earmarked budget of €3.4 Bn, this remarkable interest signals European industry’s unwavering commitment to the EU’s journey toward climate neutrality while boosting competitiveness", indicates the Commission.

The total funding requested by the net-zero technologies projects amounted to €21.7 Bn, exceeding the available budget of €2.4 Bn by more than nine times. "Those are located in 28 European Economic Area countries and collectively would avoid emitting an equivalent of 1.8 M tonnes of CO2 over their first 10 years of operation".

Regarding the battery technologies projects, the 14 applications are requesting €1.6 Bn in EU funding, exceeding the allocated budget by €1 Bn. "Project proposals are located in eight EU member states, with the…
