KU Leuven (Belgium): Séverine Vermeire elected Rector on 20/05/2025

Séverine Vermeire is elected Rector of KU Leuven (Belgium) for the 2025-2029 term after obtaining the required majority of votes (51,9%) on 20/05/2025. She will take office on 01/08/2025.

Severine Vermeire has served as Research Coordinator for the Biomedical Sciences group since 2020. Prior to this role, she led the Chrometa Department, which is dedicated to chronic diseases, metabolism and ageing. She earned her medical degree from KU Leuven in 1995 and completed a PhD in Biomedical Sciences in 2001. In 2005, she joined the Faculty of Medicine as a lecturer and was appointed full professor in 2020.

"I have no doubt that KU Leuven will be in good hands. Séverine is an outstanding scientist, a skilled physician, and an experienced administrator in both university and hospital settings. I also know her as a unifying leader", indicates her predecessor Luc Sels, on LinkedIn.

Created in 1425, KU Leuven celebrates its 600th anniversary in 2025.
