State Department halting visa interviews for international students coming into the U.S.

The State Department is pausing visa interviews for international students trying to study in the U.S. while it seeks to expand the screening of their online activity on social media, according to a cable signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and obtained by The Associated Press on 27/05/2025.

The suspension is intended to be temporary and does not apply to applicants who have already scheduled their visa interviews.

Asked about this matter during the Department's press briefing on 27/05, spokesperson Tammy Bruce refuses to comment on a leaked document, but declares: "We use every tool in our tool chest to vet anyone coming into this country. We take this very seriously, and we’re going to continue to do that. It seems to be such a controversial thing that’s going on, but it shouldn’t be. And every nation should take seriously - and does - who’s coming in. So if you’re going to be applying for a visa, follow the normal process. Expect to be looked at".
