CWUR ranking 2025: American top 3; China most represented for the first time; slight drops in Europe

Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Stanford University, all American universities, are the top 3 institutions ranked in the 2025 edition of the Global 2000 list of the CWUR (Centre for World University Rankings), published on 02/06/2025.

However, China surpasses the U.S. for the first time as the country with the most universities in the ranking. American institutions slip amid slashed federal funding and disputes over academic freedom and free speech, according to CWUR.

Overall, the U.S. is the second-most represented country in the Global 2000 with 319 representatives, ten fewer than last year. Canada has 38 institutions in the table.

"Europe remains an important power player in the standings with 621 institutions in the top 2000, but the overall picture for 2025 is bleak amid growing global competition", says CWUR.

"With the United States surpassed by China as the country with the most representatives in the rankings, its reputation in the global higher education sector is under serious threat", declares Nadim Mahassen, President of the CWUR.
