U.S: Columbia University "in violation of federal laws", accreditation and federal funding at risk

"Columbia University is in violation of federal antidiscrimination laws and therefore fails to meet the standards for accreditation set by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education", says the U.S. Department of Education on 04/06/2025.

"We look forward to the Commission keeping the Department fully informed of actions taken to ensure Columbia’s compliance with accreditation standards, including compliance with federal civil rights laws", adds the Department of Education.

The Commission is recognised by the Department as an accreditation body, which means that if Columbia were to lose this accreditation, it would lose access to millions of dollars in tuition fees from government-backed student grants and loans to support students.

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education, is a non-profit membership organisation performing peer evaluation and accreditation of public and private universities and colleges in the United States and foreign higher education institutions.
