Israel Academy calling on EU to not end research partnership with Israel amid war in Palestine

"Recent political developments in the European Union pose a tangible threat to Israeli science and the future of scientific cooperation between Israel and EU member states", declares the Council of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities on 24/05/2025.

The European Union initiated a review of its partnership agreement with Israel, including its association to Horizon Europe, on 20/05/2025, invoking Article 2 of the agreement regarding human rights, in light of the war in Palestine.

"It constitutes a serious warning sign concerning the future of academic and scientific cooperation between Israel and Europe, and raises concern about Israel’s continued participation in flagship European research and development programmes", says the Council.

It also mentions "troubling developments in the United States", as the cuts in research budgets have already affected Israeli research funding. "These trends have increased Israeli science’s reliance on cooperation with Europe and underscore the gravity and complexity of the current situation", indicates the Council.
