UK: Government to set new ten-year budgets for R&D funding

New criteria unveiled by British Science Minister Patrick Vallance will give long-term certainty to research and development (R&D) work in fields such as human health and cutting-edge computing. They will also enable and support government departments as well as other public bodies to fund R&D over ten years, announces the British government on 19/05/2025.

"Giving certainty to world-class research organisations that their work will continue over the long term will help to attract greater private investment, grow the UK economy and deliver on our Plan for Change", declares Patrick Vallance.

Specific funding is still to be determined. However, the government says that:
• complex issues, which can take years to develop and understand, will be granted longer timescales to boost their chances of unearthing truly valuable solutions and improving lives;
• longer-term funding for infrastructure, such as large-scale research facilities and equipment, will give them certainty that the tools they need to drive progress are secured;
