ERC Advanced Grants 2024: 281 winners announced, Switzerland leads in winners per capita

The ERC announces the 281 winners of the Advanced Grants 2024 on 17/06/2025. All the beneficiaries share a total of €721 M, compared with €652 M in 2023 and €554 M in 2022.

The United Kingdom is the most represented host country out of a total of 23 countries in 2024 (second in 2023). Germany is next, with 35 winners. Then come Italy (25), the Netherlands (24) and France (23). However, Switzerland is the first country in terms of winners per 10 million inhabitants, with a value of 22.31.

The winners include 45 Germans, 37 Italians, 26 British and 22 French, as well as researchers from 28 other nationalities.

A total of 2,534 applicants submitted projects (compared with 1,829 for the 2023 call for proposals). The selection rate was 11%, compared with 13.9% in 2023.

Maria Leptin, President of the ERC, says: "Many scientists, around 260, with ground-breaking ideas, were rated as excellent, but remained unfunded due to a lack of funds at the ERC. We hope that more funding will be available in the future to support even more creative researchers in pursuing their scientific curiosity."
