European Commission's plan for the funding of European universities alliances in the next MFF

The European Commission wants to keep Erasmus+ as the main funding source for European universities alliances in the next MFF, News Tank learns on 25/06/2025. As part of the same application, the alliances could also be authorised to submit optional projects to other sources of funding. Research funds would therefore be given on the basis of excellence.

As part of Erasmus+, the core funding source, the main objective is to implement the Union of Skills, the vision presented by Roxana Mînzatu, EVP for Social Rights and Skills, Quality Jobs, and Preparedness, on 05/03.

Additional optional funding windows include:

• the European Competitiveness Fund for implementing both the Start-up and scale-up strategy (presented on 28/05 by Ekaterina Zaharieva, Commissioner for Start-ups and R&I) and the upcoming ERA Act, as well as for attracting global talent;
• National & Regional Partnerships to promote inclusion, employability, and local infrastructure;
• Global Europe to foster cooperation with non-EU countries in joint degrees, scholarships, and talent exchange.
