€2 trillion for the European budget 2028-2034 (MFF): €175 Bn for Horizon Europe; €40.8 Bn for Erasmus+

The European Commission earmarks €175 Bn for Horizon Europe 2028-2034, representing an 87.2% increase over its predecessor (€93.5 Bn), as part of the proposed €409 Bn European Competitiveness Fund included in the proposal for the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) presented on 16/07/2025.

The Erasmus+ programme is granted €40.8 Bn, a 55.73% increase compared to its predecessor (€26.2 Bn). Of the total MFF amount of €2 trillion, Horizon Europe represents 8.75% and Erasmus+ 2,04%.

In terms of programme structure, the new Horizon Europe retains many elements of its predecessor:

• The first pillar is devoted to excellent research (ERC, MSCA, as well as the JRC, which moves from the second to the first pillar);

• the second, called "Competitiveness and Society", remains dedicated to collaborative research and innovation. It will be dedicated to Clean Transition and Industrial Decarbonisation, Health, bioeconomy and biotechnology, Digital leadership, Resilience, Defence Industry and Space.
