Shanghai ranking 2025: Europe leading top 500 with most institutions, China leading top 1,000

The United States remains the country with the most universities in the top 500 of the Shanghai ranking, published on 15/08/2025. It is followed by China (103), the United Kingdom (37), Germany (35) and Australia (24).

However, China has more institutions in the top 1,000 than the United States, with 222 institutions and 183 universities, respectively. And among the 25 new institutions entering 2025's top 500, twelve are Chinese universities.

Europe dominates the ranking with 182 institutions represented in the top 500. Asia (152) and North America (130) are also strongly represented. Conversely, institutions from Oceania (28), South America (4) and Africa (4) are few and far between.

Five countries have seen an increase in the number of institutions featured in the ranking: China (with 12 more institutions), the United Kingdom, Japan and Austria (two more each) and Sweden (one more).
