Inauguration of Jupiter supercomputer, the world's most energy-efficient supercomputer module

The Jupiter supercomputer, which "will transform science, innovation, and policymaking across Europe", is inaugurated by Commissioner for Start-ups and R&I, Ekaterina Zaharieva, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, in Germany on 05/09/2025.

Jupiter will allow researchers "to run climate and weather models at kilometre‑scale resolution, enabling much more precise forecasts of extreme events such as heatwaves, heavy storms, and floods".

According to the European Commission, it is the world’s most energy-efficient supercomputer module: "The system runs entirely on renewable energy and features cutting-edge cooling and energy reuse". It is the first European system to achieve a performance of more than one quintillion operations per second, "a computing power level comparable to aggregating the computing capabilities of one million modern smartphones", explains the European Commission. "With this milestone, Europe enters the global league of high‑performance computing."
