EC's strategy on research and technology infrastructures "to remain a frontrunner in the R&I global race"

"To remain a frontrunner in the global race for science and innovation, Europe must reinforce decisively its research and technology infrastructures and make them even more integrated and accessible to a wider range of users", states the European Commission, launching its Strategy on research and technology infrastructures on 15/09/2025.

With a portfolio of actions in five areas, "the strategy ensures that scientists, researchers, innovators, and industry have easy access to Europe's cutting-edge facilities, high-quality data and tailored services and aims to encourage world-class researchers and innovators to Choose Europe".

With an action plan until 2027, the Commission wants to increase European research and technology infrastructure capacities, attract talent, improve and simplify governance, strengthen the international dimension, and bolster the accessibility of the infrastructures.

The Commission lists some challenges for which actions are needed: fragmented policies and funding across the EU, limited collaboration across infrastructures, insufficient access opportunities…
