European Research Area Act : Public consultation open until 05/01/2026

The European Commission launches a public consultation on the ERA (European Research Area) Act on 13/10/2025.

Introduced by the Commissioner for Start-ups and R&I, Ekaterina Zaharieva, during her hearing at the European Parliament on 05/11/2024, the ERA Act is a policy framework, expected to be adopted in the second half of 2026, to "strengthen Europe's research and innovation ecosystem by addressing long-standing challenges such as fragmented regulations, uneven researcher and development investment, barriers to researchers' mobility".

The Commission also indicates that the act will outline the pathway to achieving the goal of 3% of GDP investment in R&D, strengthen coordination between EU and national policies, and promote research careers, open science practices, and cross-border collaboration.

"The act will complement the Choose Europe initiative, part of a €500 M programme for 2025-2027, designed to attract and retain researchers from around the world and to promote Europe as a leading destination for scientific excellence."
