EU proposes Mediterranean University as part of regional pact

The EU wants to open a Mediterranean University with its partners in the region, according to a Pact for the Mediterranean published by the European Commission on 16/10/2025.

According to the Pact, the university will be an institution with campuses in the "Common Mediterranean Space" and would feature programmes on humanities and natural and technical sciences.

The document says that the university will "build on the experiences of higher educational institutions in the region" and "European university alliances" while making use of "existing capacity-building actions under the Erasmus+ programme". It will promote staff and student exchanges across universities and business schools and aim to develop joint curricula and programmes and joint degrees.

The Commission said in a press release that each of the initiatives in the Pact will be turned into an action plan and that the first action plan is expected to be ready in the first quarter of 2026.
