Science Europe publishes scoping review of impact of open science on research culture

A scoping review published by Science Europe on the contribution of open science to research culture has found that its impact depends a lot on whether there is structural and cultural support for its aims within research institutions themselves.

The review, “The Contributions of Open Science to Research Culture”, was commissioned by Science Europe to investigate how open science practices affect research culture. It was published in October.

The findings look at the effect on the following aspects of research culture: equality, diversity and inclusion; openness and transparency; integrity and ethic; care and collegiality; collaboration; and autonomy/freedom.

In the review, the authors quote the Royal Society’s definition of research culture as “the behaviours, values, expectations, attitudes and norms of our research communities”.
