ERC awards Synergy grants to 66 projects representing 239 researchers

The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded the 2025 Synergy grant to 66 projects representing 239 researchers, it announced on 06/11/2025. Of the projects, 28 involve grantees based in Germany, 24 in the United Kingdom, and 21 each in France and the United States. The successful projects will receive, on average €10.3m each.

Synergy Grants support groups of two to four principal investigators (PIs) in combining their complementary skills, knowledge and resources to pursue a research project. In total, 712 proposals were submitted to this call. Only about one in ten proposals was selected for funding.

As in 2024, Germany has the highest number of researchers represented in the projects at 41, followed by the UK and France. However, Switzerland has the highest number of successful researchers per 10m inhabitants (14.36) with 13 successful applicants.

The selected projects will be carried out at universities and research centres in 26 countries across Europe and beyond.
