The Guild says European Universities Initiative should be continued for alliances to "grow beyond pilots"

The Guild of Research Intensive Universities is calling for the European Universities Initiative (EUI) to be continued to ensure that its achievements are maintained.

In a paper published on 17/11/2025, the Guild, which represents 23 universities, argued that what had been built in the European Universities Initiative (EUI) must now be sustained "so that alliances do not remain pilots without pathways to long-term consolidation".

Alliances have generated significant momentum in transnational collaboration by strengthening ties between institutions, encouraging fresh teaching approaches and fostering new habits of collaboration that go well beyond traditional forms of mobility, according to the Guild.

Their analysis also stressed that diversity of institutional missions and national systems remained both a strength and a challenge, requiring policy frameworks that were flexible, coherent and aligned across governance levels.
