European Commission report sets out member states' actions to boost academic careers across Europe

The majority of European countries have adopted top-level strategies or enacted major reforms in recent years to address challenges facing academic staff, according to an EU report titled "Academic staff in Europe 2025" and published by the European Education and Culture Executive Agency on 10/11/2025.

This report, drawn up by Eurydice (a network of 43 European National Units providing data and analyses on European education systems), outlines the current state of play for academic staff, covering topics from employment status to institutional trends and funding strategies across 38 education systems.

The report underscores the crucial function of university personnel in achieving European goals, noting that academic staff are "indispensable to the higher education system, playing a pivotal role in delivering quality education, fostering innovation and driving economic growth".
