First draft for revision of European Standards and Guidelines published for feedback

The organisations responsible for revision of the European Standards and Guidelines (ESG) have published a first draft for consultation and feedback.

The ESG are a set of standards and guidelines for internal and external quality assurance in higher education, providing guidance that covers various areas for quality provision of learning environments in higher education. They are implemented in all 49 countries that are signatories of the Bologna process and the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).

The main proposed changes include an emphasis on the independence of quality assurance agencies; on the involvement of stakeholders, including students, in programme design/monitoring; and on the focus on learning and teaching of the internal quality assurance processes in general.

The draft was published by the European Students' Union (ESU), the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA), the European University Association (EUA) and the European Association for the Applied Sciences in Higher Education (EURASHE) on 21/11/2025.
