Lise Øvreås appointed President of the European Academies' Science Advisory Council (EASAC)

The European Academies' Science Advisory Council (EASAC) has appointed Lise Øvreås as its new President for 2026-2028, the regional association of National Academies of Science announced on 01/01/2026.

Øvreås, a former EASAC Vice-President, is a professor of geomicrobiology at the University of Bergen in Norway, She brings "extensive scientific and leadership experience to the role, having previously served as President of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters from 2022 to 2024," EASAC said.

She emphasises the importance of scientific advice in times of global uncertainty: “Science must help society to navigate complex global challenges, such as climate change, biodiversity loss and sustainable energy - by providing actionable solutions based on evidence,” she says.

Øvreås will chair the Council, EASAC’s supreme strategic and decision-making body composed of 29 experienced scientists, representing each member academy.
