Directory of Open Access Journals announces 2026-2028 strategy

The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) presented its new strategy for 2026-2028 on 20/01/2026 with three themes. The themes are: extend coverage, champion open-access journals and lead the development of global quality standards.

The new DOAJ strategy needs "to serve the global open-access community, respond to real needs and reflect shared values", according to Managing Director Joanna Ball.

She said there was a rapidly changing environment for scholarly publishing, with an increased focus on the inequities of the current publishing system, a growing momentum for Diamond and community-led, no-fee models (a form of open access in which the content is freely available to readers and authors do not have to pay to publish their articles), concerns about research integrity, the use of AI in scholarly publishing, and the prevalence of paper mills.

"At the same time, we’re also seeing open research information become a priority for more institutions and services," Ball added.
